SUMMARY:AOS (WA) DINNER LECTURE: Nocebodontics and Predict Prevent and Manage Post-Implant Pain
DESCRIPTION:AOS (WA) DINNER LECTURE \nAOS WA IS PROUD TO PRESENT \nNocebodontics and Predict Prevent and Manage Post-Implant PainSynopsis: \nSo\, you’ve placed the perfect implant… and now your patient is in pain and blaming you for ruining their life (and their trip to Bali to restore it). This lecture dives into the not-so-glamorous but absolutely crucial world of predicting and preventing nerve injuries and post-operative pain after implant placement. We’ll explore the usual suspects—patient quirks\, surgical misadventures\, and implant oddities—that can turn a routine case into a post-operative nightmare. You’ll learn how to spot red flags before the scalpel hits the gingiva\, plan like a clairvoyant\, and avoid nerve-related horror stories and pain that only a “soccer player” can relate to. Walk away armed with evidence-based tactics to keep your patients comfortable\, your inbox complaint-free\, and your 5-star Google Reviews intact. \nLearning Outcomes: \nBy the end of this evening\, attendees will be able to: \n\nRecognise the key patient\, surgical\, and implant-related risk factors associated with post-implant pain.\nApply evidence-based protocols to predict\, prevent\, identify and manage post-implant therapy pain.\nDesign a treatment plan for patients experiencing post-operative pain and/or implant-related neuropathy.\n\nEver said\, “This might sting a bit\,” and watched your patient tense like you’d threatened their firstborn? Welcome to Nocebodontics—the notso-magical art of unintentionally turning reassurance into suffering for dental care. This presentation dives deep into the dark side of suggestion\, where your well-meaning warnings\, arse covering consent forms\, and unfortunate resting face activate your patient’s pain matrix before you touch enamel. You’ll uncover how the nocebo effect—the sinister twin of placebo—can amplify anxiety\, worsen outcomes\, and make you question why your indemnity premium keeps rising. We’ll unpack the psychoneurobiological mechanics that turn thoughts into pain\, look at clinical scenarios where nocebo has sabotaged success (looking at you\, wisdom teeth pamphlets)\, and explore what you can do to reverse the curse using evidence-based Jedi mind tricks. \nLearning Outcomes: \nBy the end of this presentation\, attendees will be able to: \n\nDefine the nocebo effect and distinguish it from placebo\, including its origins\, key characteristics\, and relevance to modern dental practice.\nDescribe the psychoneurobiological basis of the nocebo response\, including the role of patient expectation\, anxiety\, and clinician communication in activating pain and stress pathways.\nIdentify and mitigate the practical impact of nocebo in dentistry\, using strategies to reduce negative suggestion\, reframe risk communication\, and improve patient outcomes.\n\n A/Prof Ramesh Balasubramanium OAM \nBSc\, BDSc (UWA)\, MS\, Cert Orofacial Pain (UKy)\, Cert Oral Medicine (UPenn)\, MRACDS (OralMed)\, ABOP\, FDS RCPS(Glasg)\, FDS RCSEd\, FOMAA\, FADI\, FPFA\, FICD Oral Medicine Specialist  \nRamesh Balasubramaniam is an Oral Medicine Specialist with expertise in temporomandibular disorders\, orofacial pain and dental sleep medicine. He has numerous peer reviewed publications\, co-authored several chapters\, and coedited and co-authored three books notably “Contemporary Oral Medicine”. In addition\, he serves as a reviewer for several peer-reviewed journals. Ramesh is associate professor and discipline lead in Oral Medicine at the University of Western Australia\, Dental School and is actively involved in teaching and research. He has lectured extensively both nationally and internationally. For his ongoing contributions to dentistry\, he has received fellowships and awards\, most notably the Medal of the Order of Australia in 2021. Ramesh was president of the Oral Medicine Academy of Australasia (2019-2022). He also has public appointments at the Oral Health Centre of Western Australia and the Perth Children’s Hospital.

SUMMARY:AOS VIC Online Stream: Predictable Results in Unpredictable Times Dr. Irfan QURESHI (MSc Prosthodontics\, Pakistan)
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE CLICK HERE TO REGISTER FOR THE EVENT  Start 7.00 pm Melbourne. \nWelcome to the AOS VB Dinner-Meeting \nWe are happy to present:  Dr. Irfan Qureshi from Pakistan DDS \n\n\n\nLecture: Predictable Results in Unpredictable Times. \nPredictable and Safe Sinus Augmentation \nSinus augmentation remains one of the most technique-sensitive yet indispensable procedures for predictable implant rehabilitation in the posterior maxilla. This presentation traces the evolution of sinus grafting approaches\, with a focus on both crestal and lateral techniques supported by long-term follow-up data. Evidence-based protocols will be shared\, highlighting the use of advanced biomaterials such as autologous tooth bone\, CGF\, and the ASAP technique. Specialized surgical kits designed to enhance safety\, precision\, and predictability will be demonstrated\, alongside detailed step-by-step documentation of complex cases with up to ten years of follow-up. Participants will gain practical insights into optimizing treatment planning\, minimizing complications\, and achieving consistent\, reproducible outcomes. \nRestoratively Driven Implant Dentistry: Surgical–Prosthetic Interface \nImplant dentistry is best approached as the seamless integration of surgery and prosthetics—two sides of the same coin. This session will highlight how meticulous prosthetic planning drives surgical execution\, ensuring optimal esthetic\, functional\, and biological outcomes. By treating the surgical and restorative phases as inseparable\, clinicians can improve precision\, reduce complications\, and deliver restorations that achieve long-term harmony between biological tissue health and mechanical stability. Real-world clinical cases will illustrate how restoratively driven protocols elevate predictability and patient satisfaction\, reinforcing the principle that true implant success lies in the synergy of surgical and prosthetic disciplines. \n\n\n \nDr Irfan Qureshi did his Master`s in Prosthodontics from King`s College London. He is a Diplomate Implant Dentistry from the prestigious Royal College of Surgeons\, Edinburgh (Dip Imp Dent RCSEd) and remains the first and only Pakistan based clinician with this degree. Dr Irfan Qureshi has also earned Membership of the faculty of Dental Surgery at Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Glasgow MFDS RCPS(Glasg). He is also an Examiner in good standing for Implant Dentistry exams at the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh\, UK.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr Irfan is also an ambassador and Diplomate ICOI (International Congress of Oral Implantologists). He has a fellowship from WAUPS (World Academy of Ultrasonic and Piezoelectric Bone Surgery)\, Fellowship from IDIA (International Dental Implant Academy). \nHe is an examiner for implantology exams with the Royal College of Surgeons\, Edinburgh in Scotland\, UK. Dr Irfan Qureshi was awarded with the recognition of being among the World`s Top 100 Doctors in Dentistry by the Global Summit Institute in Los Angeles USA and in 2020 and in 2023 was awarded a Life Time Achievement award by the Global Summit Institute . \nHe is considered a pioneer and dynamic speaker and clinician in his home country of Pakistan where he lectures nationwide. \nDr  Irfan has lectured world wide in USA\, Germany\, Romania\, Thailand\, Japan\, Iraq\, Vietnam and UAE and is known for his approach to excellence in clinical implantology. \nAnd now we are happy to welcome Dr Qureshi in Australia to lecture for the AOS MEMBERS in Melbourne (and all the other branches online) and for the ICOI World Congress 2025 in Sydney.
